Ever since I met you at DCAF, I've been interested in water painting but I have no idea how to get into it. Any suggestions or tips?
Sure thing! Ok, if you’re just starting out, I’d get to your nearest art store and pick up a pad of watercolour paper, and a set of watercolours like these babies. These aren’t exactly the best watercolours in existence… far from it, in fact. The good watercolours usually come in tubes, but these ones are $8.00, and if you’re just testing stuff out and getting a rough feel for the medium, they’re okay to start with!
Watercolours are all about gently layering the colours and building things up from the bottom. Start with the lightest tones first, and work your way up to the darkest and most saturated. - for instance, if I were painting like… brown hair, then I’d start with a really light yellow wash, then once that dried, put on a layer of orange, then a mixture of orange and brown, maybe some red… It’s a slow process, but it can be very relaxing (and if you’re too bored to wait for the paint to dry, sometimes you can use a hair dryer to speed things up as long as you put it on the weakest setting!)
Here’s a bunch of watercolour tutorials that probably sum it up better than I could! http://www.deviantart.com/?q=watercolor+tutorial
